The Power of Referrals: How to Get More Customers Without Spending on Ads
🕒 Read time: 4 minutes
“My mate told me to come to you.”
Those are the best words you can hear.
Referrals are the cheapest, fastest, and most powerful way to grow your tyre business — and most garages don’t have a proper system to get them.
Let’s fix that.
Why referrals matter
A customer who was referred to you:
- Already trusts you (thanks to the friend)
- Is less sensitive about price
- Is more likely to refer others
It’s a chain reaction. One happy customer can lead to 3 more — but only if you give them a reason to talk about you.
So… why don’t more people refer?
It’s not because they didn’t like your service.
It’s because they forgot. Or didn’t think to. Or didn’t know how.
Referrals don’t happen by luck. You have to plant the seed.
How to get more referrals (the simple way)
1. Ask at the right moment
After a happy customer says “thanks,” say:
“Glad I could help. If you’ve got mates who need tyres or a quick mobile callout, feel free to send them my number. I’ll look after them.”
Simple. No pressure. But it plants the idea.
2. Make it easy for them
Most people won’t refer you unless it’s dead simple.
That means:
- Use WhatsApp — easy to forward your contact
- Have a short name they can search (“Tyreroom” is better than “John’s Mobile Vehicle Tyre Repairs LTD”)
- Send them a follow-up message they can forward, like:
“Thanks for choosing us! Save this number under TYRES. If your friends need tyres or get stuck, send them my way — I’ll take care of them.”
3. Offer a small reward (optional)
You don’t need to offer money.
Even a small thank-you goes a long way.
Some ideas:
- £5 off next booking for each referral
- Free coffee or air freshener on next visit
- “Free puncture repair for every 3 referrals”
Don’t overthink it. Just show appreciation.
4. Use QR codes and stickers
If you have a shop or van:
- Put a QR code on the counter or inside the van
- It can link to your Google Review page or WhatsApp
- Add a little sign:
“Happy with the service? Share us with a mate or leave a quick review – thanks!”
You can even print a few stickers with your number and QR code for customers to give out.
5. Remind people gently
In your WhatsApp status or monthly messages, drop a line like:
“We grow by word of mouth — if we’ve helped you out, tell a mate. We appreciate it!”
No need to be pushy. Just keep reminding.
Final thoughts
Referrals aren’t luck — they’re built.
If you do great work, make it easy to share, and thank people for doing it, you’ll never be short of bookings.
Every tyre job could be your next 3 customers.
